Jamdani Weaving School for Young Women in Rupganj
A one-year loom school for 20 young women from weaver families, with six teaching looms next to Rupganj Jamdani House.
About the campaign
I learned at my mother’s loom. Most girls in Noapara today never get that chance. Young women in weaver families in Rupganj leave for garment factories because nobody has time to teach them the loom, and the craft loses a generation. A one-year course on six teaching looms, with trainees weaving paid orders from the sixth month. A share of the sale price of trainee-woven sarees, and a course fee paid by a skills programme. Boutiques in Dhaka buy every good jamdani they can get. Our own house turns away about 30 orders a season. A list of 34 young women who want to join, and a landlord willing to rent the room next to our shed.
