Biofloc Tilapia Tanks for Brahmaputra Aqua, Trishal
Eight biofloc tanks that grow tilapia in a fraction of the water and land of a pond, next to our ponds in Trishal.
About the campaign
I have farmed ponds since 2014. Two years ago I built two biofloc tanks to try it, and they grew more fish than my smallest pond. This raise builds eight. Pond land around Trishal is expensive to lease and ponds need a lot of water and feed. Many young farmers cannot get started. Biofloc tanks: bacteria turn fish waste into food, so a tank grows 10 to 15 times more tilapia per litre of water than a pond, on a quarter of the feed. We sell tilapia to wholesalers in Mymensingh and Dhaka every six weeks, and sell fingerlings from the nursery to other farms. Mymensingh is the biggest fish-farming district in the country. Wholesalers in Shambhuganj buy every tonne we bring. A two-tank pilot grew 1.1 tonnes of tilapia last year and sold all of it.
